The Serre-Chevalier Briançon
ski area

An exceptional area

Serre-Chevalier Vallée Briançon, in the heart of the Giants, is the only example in France of a ski resort backing onto a town with over 10,000 inhabitants.

With more than 2,230 hours of sunshine a year, Briançon is one of the sunniest towns in France (mainly due to the good winter sunshine).

The Serre-Chevalier ski area

One of the largest ski areas in Europe, the Serre-Chevalier ski area links the 3 villages (Chantemerle/Saint-Chaffrey, Villeneuve/La Salle-les-Alpes, Le Monêtier les Bains) as well as Briançon.

The Serre-Chevalier ski area consists of :

– 410 hectares of marked runs

– 60 ski lifts

– 80 runs (13 black, 28 red, 25 blue and 14 green)

– 80% of the runs are at an altitude

Optimal snow cover and skiing conditions

Average monthly snowfall at Serre Chevalier:

Month Snowfall de neige Number of snowfall days Average snow cover (in the village) Average snow cover at the top of the slopes
November 19 cm 2 days 10 cm 50 cm
December 98 cm 5 days 36 cm 116 cm
January 67 cm 6 days 40 cm 143 cm
February 62 cm 6 days 51 cm 168 cm
March 73 cm 6 days 43 cm 193 cm

The Serre-Chevalier ski area is also equipped with a large network of artificial snow covering a third of its surface area.

At the heart of the Giants

Surrounded by the Tour de France’s greatest mountain passes (the Galibier, Le Lautaret, the Izoard and the Granon), the Serre-Chevalier valley is closely linked to the history of the Tour de France.

The Galibier (2,642 m) has been crossed more than 60 times by the riders of the Grand Loop, the Izoard (2,360 m) more than 35 times and the Lautaret (2,058 m) more than 25 times. The Col du Granon (2,413 m) has only been climbed twice, during legendary stages in 1986 and 2022.
